DISEASE INFORMATION

Tick bite

After a tick bite, most people do not develop illness. Medical assessment may be relevant if symptoms develop or if a typical expanding rash occurs. Advice depends on timing, symptoms, and individual risk factors.

What to do

  • Remove the tick as soon as possible
  • Clean the area with soap and water
  • Note the date of the bite and the location on the body

What to monitor

  • Expanding red rash over days (may be ring-shaped)
  • Fever, headache, muscle/joint aches
  • Unusual fatigue

When to seek assessment

Seek medical assessment if you develop any sign of Lyme disease:

  • An expanding rash
  • Fever or flu-like symptoms after a bite
  • Neurological symptoms (e.g. facial weakness)
  • Severe illness

If the patient appears seriously ill, call 112.

Consultation options

A doctor can assess symptoms and advise on appropriate next steps. Prescribing decisions depend on clinical assessment and applicable rules.

Information on this page is general and does not replace an individual medical assessment. In emergencies, call 112.
