Influenza

Influenza is a viral respiratory infection that typically causes sudden onset of fever, aches, and fatigue. Treatment is usually supportive, but some patients may require medical assessment due to risk factors or severity.

Common symptoms

  • Fever and chills
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Cough / sore throat

Self-care

Rest, fluids, and fever relief (as appropriate) are commonly used. Avoid close contact with others when ill. If symptoms are worsening or you have significant underlying illness, seek medical assessment.

What to look out for

Seek prompt medical assessment if you experience:

  • Breathing difficulty or chest pain
  • Confusion, severe weakness, or dehydration
  • Persistent high fever
  • Worsening after initial improvement
  • High-risk conditions (e.g. severe chronic disease, pregnancy)

If the patient appears seriously ill, call 112.

Consultation options

A doctor can assess symptoms and risk factors by telephone and advise on next steps. If examination is needed, a house call may be arranged depending on location and availability.

Information on this page is general and does not replace an individual medical assessment. In emergencies, call 112.
