Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the eye surface and eyelids. Causes include viral infection, bacteria, and allergy. Some symptoms require urgent assessment to protect vision.

Common symptoms

  • Red eye
  • Gritty or irritated feeling
  • Discharge (watery or sticky)
  • Mild swelling of eyelids
  • Itching (often allergy-related)

Self-care

Avoid touching the eyes, wash hands frequently, and avoid sharing towels. Some cases improve without prescription treatment, depending on cause.

Seek urgent assessment if

  • Severe pain in the eye
  • Light sensitivity
  • Reduced vision
  • Marked swelling around the eye
  • Contact lens wearer with symptoms
