DISEASE INFORMATION

Cystitis

Medical assessment and treatment can be provided by telephone consultation or, when needed, by house call.

Overview

Cystitis (bladder infection) commonly causes burning pain during urination and frequent need to urinate. In many cases the condition can be assessed based on symptoms.

Symptoms

  • Burning pain during urination
  • Frequent urination
  • Pressure above the pubic bone
  • Cloudy or pink urine
  • Mild fever

Self care

Increased fluid intake may relieve symptoms in some cases, but medical evaluation is often needed. Antibiotic treatment may be prescribed when clinically indicated.

What to look out for

The following symptoms may indicate a more serious infection and require prompt medical assessment:

  • High fever
  • Flank or back pain
  • Marked general malaise
  • Repeated infections
  • Urinary infection in children

If the patient appears seriously ill, call the Danish emergency number 112.

Consultation options

A doctor can assess symptoms by telephone and advise on treatment. If physical examination is needed, a house call may be arranged.
