Cystitis

Cystitis (bladder infection / urinary tract infection) often causes burning urination and frequent urination. Assessment may be possible based on symptoms, but some cases require testing or examination.

Common symptoms

  • Burning pain during urination
  • Frequent urination
  • Pressure above the pubic bone
  • Cloudy or pink urine
  • Mild fever

Self-care

Drinking fluids may relieve symptoms in some cases. However, persistent symptoms or significant discomfort should be medically assessed. Antibiotic treatment is only prescribed when clinically indicated.

What to look out for

The following may indicate a more serious infection and require prompt medical assessment:

  • High fever
  • Flank/back pain
  • Marked general malaise
  • Repeated infections
  • Urinary infection in children
